Lincoln wrote to thank Fawcett for sending him a copy of his song “The President’s Emancipation March.” Fawcett wrote the music following the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln announced on January 22, 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863.
